Founded in 1975 to promote the history, language and culture of Italy in the United States, the National Italian American Foundation is an organisation based in Washington, DC.

The two primary aims of NIAF are to encourage Italian Americans to preserve their rich cultural heritage and traditions, while ensuring that the whole community remembers Italy's huge contribution to the history and progress of the USA. To celebrate the great legacy that unites the two nations and all the goals achieved so far, the NIAF organises an anniversary gala in October each year, in Washington DC. The event is usually attended by the president of the USA, leading figures from the political, financial and cultural arena as well as famous Italian Americans. During the evening, awards are presented to eminent Italians and Italian-Americans who have distinguished themselves in their personal or professional life.
